Dylan sat stiffly at the formal dining room table staring at where Gracie sat completely shell-shocked across from him. She looked as if he'd just appeared out of thin air. Which, of course, he had … with a little bit of Priscilla Mattias's persistence. Persistence? More like mother-handling. The woman had literally dragged him out of the country club, maneuvered him away from his waiting taxi and stuffed him into the front seat of her Lexus. She then proceeded to drive him here, to her house.

A clink of a serving spoon against a dish brought his attention back to the conversation. Gracie's mother said, "It's the funniest thing, really. After catching this morning's show at Adele's—" she slid a glance at Gracie that puzzled him "—Colleen invited us all to her country club for the seminar. Her reasoning, and my entire reason for going, of course, was in the hopes that you could somehow redeem yourself, Grace."Of course, I had no idea that you had decided to opt out." She took a sip of wine. "Very bad form, by the way. You could have feigned an illness in the family or something."

Gracie rolled her eyes. "A lie your presence would have certainly negated."

"I didn't mean for you to say I was ill."

"No, but you would have immediately made it clear that no one else was, either."

"Not if you had told me in advance." Priscilla frowned. "My, but you're in a mood tonight."

And Dylan didn't doubt that he was the cause of it. Even if he didn't think that way, he would have known the instant Gracie looked at him, turning the stare she had just bestowed on her mother on him.

"Anyway, where was I?" Priscilla continued. "Oh, yes, the country club…"

Dylan slowly spooned some sort of black rice onto his plate, then handed the serving bowl to the dark, tall, robust man who had been introduced as Dr. Richard Mattias, the most renowned reconstructive surgeon on the Eastern Seaboard. The movement placed Dylan's tie smack dab in the middle of whatever fish was on his plate. He cast a glance around to see if anyone had noticed, but Gracie was busy glaring at her own food, Priscilla was rattling on about it being her first time at the country club, and gee they really should join and Richard was watching his wife with a bemused expression on his handsomely lined face.

Dylan discreetly dabbed at the stain with his linen napkin. He was astounded by the glimpse he was getting into Gracie's life and upbringing. Given her free-thinking philosophies, he'd figured she had come from a lower to middle class background, raised by parents that were by-products of the seventies disco scene. Instead he was surprised to find both Priscilla and Richard ultra-conservatives who probably had never even seen Saturday Night Fever and had no idea who John Travolta was.

He really didn't know where he got off making assumptions about anyone, considering his own background. His parents Moonbeam and Frank often commented that they had no idea how they'd produced a kid so thoroughly uncool.
